What is the Kalish Method

Dr. Daniel Kalish is a pioneer in the world of Functional Medicine, and over the last 20 years he has developed a model of Functional Medicine that has successfully treated over 8,000 patients. Functional Medicine looks at the underlying cause of your health problems through specialised lab testing and clinical signs and symptoms, rather than just treating the symptoms.

Dr. Kalish still has a small private practice and now spends most of his time training other practitioners in his lab based systems approach. This system of Functional Medicine addresses the hormones, digestion and detoxification, when even one of these systems go out of balance it can lead to many of the chronic health problems that are affecting people today.

The Kalish Method addresses the 5 most common chronic conditions which are weight gain, hormone imbalances (adrenal, sex hormone and thyroid), fatigue, depression and digestion problems.

Kalish Practitioner in Australia

After practicing as a Naturopath for 13 years, I trained with Dr Daniel Kalish for one year, a lot of this was valuable one on one training going through many lab tests and this has changed the way I work with clients. The Kalish Method cuts out a lot of the guess work when working with clients, this enables me to quickly formulate effective treatment plans.

I work with clients throughout the U.S, Australia and other parts of the world, Functional pathology test kits can be sent to anywhere in the world, once the results are back we do a full health history and consultation to go through the results via video conferencing or phone.

We use a combination of diet, lifestyle and quality supplements to help you get your health back on track.

Conditions that the Kalish Method treats

Adrenal Fatigue :
The symptoms of adrenal fatigue are wide and varied, they include fatigue, weight gain, PMS, menopause symptoms, mood changes, digestion problems, osteoporosis and immune dysfunction.

The longer you have Adrenal Fatigue the longer the list of symptoms that you have is going to be, and as it leads to digestion and immune issues it can be the cause behind many chronic health conditions such as diabetes, autoimmune conditions, cardiovascular disease, depression and digestion problems.

Find Out What The Best Test Is For Assessing Adrenal And Sex Hormones

Thyroid and Sex Hormone imbalance:
Your Adrenal function strongly influences the thyroid hormones and the sex hormones, once one hormone system goes out of balance it can then lead to problems with the other hormone systems.

Each person is different and deciding what lab tests to do will vary from person to person but if your having menstrual cycle problems then testing adrenal function and the sex hormones would be a good place to start. If your finding it impossible to lose weight, then testing thyroid function as well would be a good idea.

Digestion disorders:
Many people struggle with an “irritable bowel” which causes symptoms like constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, gas, heartburn, indigestion and pain, identifying the cause through specialised stool testing and Organic Acids testing helps to identify the cause.

Digestion problems can cause many other problems like autoimmune conditions, skin problems, fatigue, low immune and mood issues.

Functional Pathology Testing

Functional pathology is a lot different to the standard blood test that your doctor does, often people have a whole range of symptoms but the standard blood tests come back showing that everything is “fine”. I usually recommend starting with 1-3 tests depending on the person.

Adrenal testing measures cortisol at 4 different times of the day which assesses the body’s natural cortisol rhythm plus DHEA levels. If you have insomnia measuring cortisol and melatonin in the middle of the night is also a good option. Find out more information about adrenal fatigue

Thyroid testing measures TSH, T4, T3, reverse T3, thyroid antibodies and thyroid receptor antibodies. A doctor usually only measures TSH which is not a good indicator of thyroid dysfunction by itself. For more information on thyroid testing check out this article

Sex Hormones, these are usually measured with a saliva test which shows the bioavailable hormones (not just what is in the blood), common hormones that I test for are progesterone, estogren X 3, testosterone and DHEA

Organic Acids testing measures how your energy systems are working, fat metabolism, liver function, bacterial and candida markers, vitamin deficiencies and neurotransmitter metabolites. For more information on Organic Acids check out this article

Stool testing measures parasite and bacterial infections, Helicobacter pylori and other inflammatory markers

Extensive cholesterol testing measures Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL, clotting factors, inflammatory markers and the LDL particle size. For more information go check out the cholesterol testing article
