How to optimize your heart health with customized recommendations for diet, nutritional supplements, exercise, and lifestyle modifications based on your test results

Hi, my name is Michael Smith, ND BHSC and Head Practitioner at Planet Naturopath.

While I don’t know the exact reason you’re interested in cardiovascular testing, I do know you’re searching for answers.

Whether that means looking for natural solutions to chronic health problems, reducing your cardiac risk, or just wanting a more accurate picture of your cholesterol.

If you want to find those answers, I can tell you the best way to start...is with testing.

But not just any old test. Traditional cardiovascular testing is outdated and limited by Medicare and insurance restrictions.

Our Extensive Cardiovascular Test, on the other hand, looks at a wider range of blood and inflammation markers to provide a more complete picture of your cardiac health and how they all the elements work together.

But what makes the ECT from Planet Naturopath invaluable, is what happens after you get your results. With our 30 minute in-depth one on one consultation, I’ll explain what your results actually mean to you, your health, and your body.

This is the fun part for me, because as Head Practitioner I enjoy doing all the consultations with our clients. My passion is helping people find natural solutions to optimize their health.

I’ll give you the complete details how the consultations work and how they can benefit you, but let’s start with:

Who The Extensive Cardiovascular Test Is For

The Extensive Cardiovascular Test (ECT) can help provide a more complete and
accurate picture of heart health for anyone:

  • With a family history of heart disease
  • Diagnosed with high cholesterol
  • Currently taking statin medications
  • Wanting a healthy heart so they can live a long and happy life

What The Test Covers and How It Can Benefit You

  • Cholesterol
  • Triglycerides
  • HDL
  • Diagnosed with high cholesterol

These are the “big four” core markers that conventional medicine focuses on. While they are important - they only tell part of the story. Over the last 50 years, through new discoveries, technology, and research with diet and nutrition we’ve learned more about heart health than ever before.

Our Extensive Cardiovascular Testing Process goes beyond the big four and measures biomarkers and inflammation markers not used with traditional testing to give you a more detailed and complete picture of your cardiac health.

Your ECT also measures:

  • LDL particle size - Recent research has revealed the importance of LDL particle size. Several studies show that people with predominantly small and dense LDL particles (referred to as pattern B) have three times the risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

It is possible to have normal, or even low levels of cholesterol yet have higher levels of small dense LDL particles and an increased risk of heart disease.

The large fluffy LDL (known as pattern A) may be protective of cardiovascular disease, and help to prevent age-related neurological conditions.

Your genetics can influence whether you have the healthy type of cholesterol or the small dense LDL particles.

Our ECT can help you determine what your ideal diet should be, including how much and what types of fats you should be eating.

Because even though LDL particle size is mainly genetically inherited, it’s possible for people with the small dense pattern B LDL particles to increase their particle size through lifestyle modifications.

  • Apolipoprotein B and LDL Particle number - Apolipoprotein B or Apo B for short is a good indicator of LDL particle number, which shows a strong risk factor of cardiovascular disease compared to just looking at LDL levels.

A high Apo B indicates the presence of many small dense pattern B LDL particles, that combined with inflammation can lead to atherosclerosis.

You can lower your Apo B level by reducing your saturated fat, carbohydrate and cholesterol intake with your diet. As well as increasing your intake of vegetables, fiber, and omega 3 fatty acids (like fish, eggs, peanut butter, spinach, and broccoli).

Regular exercise can also help lower your Apo B levels.

  • HsCRP and Inflammation - High sensitive C Reactive Protein (HsCRP) is the best blood test to indicate inflammation in your body. This is a test that many doctors don’t use - despite its strong association with increased cardiovascular disease.

Doctors normally test CRP instead (because it’s covered by medicare). But the potential problem here is that the test only detects CRP levels above 5, so it could miss low-grade inflammation in the 3-5 range that could lead to causing atherosclerosis.

The ECT test also measures homocysteine levels, which is an inflammation marker associated with cardiovascular disease and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

High HsCRP levels are a bigger predictor of cardiovascular disease than just measuring total cholesterol or LDL levels, because without inflammation the cholesterol will not damage the arterial wall.

  • Very Low- Density Lipoproteins (VLDL) - VLDL cholesterol is a type of blood fat considered one of the “bad” forms along with LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. This is because high levels of VLDL can cause plaque deposits that can clog your arteries, restrict blood flow and possibly lead to a heart attack.

If you have a family history of heart disease or high cholesterol you definitely want to check your VLDL levels.

VLDL levels are typically higher with a high carbohydrate diet that contains more triglycerides that are associated with increased risk of heart disease.

Usually with a high fat/ low carbohydrate diet you will see LDL levels stay around the same (or sometimes even rise). But VLDL levels and Apo B levels will drop indicating that you have the good LDL cholesterol.

The best way to lower your VLDL levels is to lower your triglycerides. You can do that by focusing on losing weight and regular exercise. And watching your intake of sugary food and alcohol.

customer testimonials

Prior to my initial consultation with Michael I did have some hesitations about the over the phone/online format, having always opted for in-person consultations with practitioners in the past. However, I soon came to appreciate the sheer ease, convenience and time saving factor of the consultations being conducted in this manner.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cardiovascular Test

How do you get tested for cardiovascular disease?

There are several tests that can be done to detect cardiovascular disease:

- Angiogram involves using a catheter to insert a dye into the coronary arteries while x-rays are taken.

- Calcium score test is a CT scan of the coronary arteries to detect plaque build up, this is recommended for anyone over 50 with a family history of cardiovascular disease to do at least once.

- Pathology testing to measure inflammation markers like HsCRP, cholesterol and more importantly than cholesterol apolipoprotein B, homocysteine and lipoprotein (a) should be tested. These tests are good to do at any stage of life, if your young it is a good idea to get a baseline reading while if you are older it can help to prevent cardiovascular disease.

What is included in a cardiovascular screening?

The Extensive Cardiovascular blood test at Planet Naturopath covers all of the standard cholesterol markers, plus fibrinogen, homocysteine, HsCRP, lipoprotein (a), apolipoprotein B plus the option of testing the LDL subfractions.

What is the best test to check for clogged arteries?

The best test to assess clogged arteries is an Angiogram but this is an invasive test that involves the insertion of a catheter. The next best option and one that I recommend to clients is the Calcium Score test which is a CT scan of the coronary arteries. These tests can be organized by your doctor.

Is there a blood test for cardiovascular disease?

Yes, the Extensive Cardiovascular blood test at Planet Naturopath covers all of the standard cholesterol markers, plus fibrinogen, homocysteine, HsCRP, lipoprotein (a), apolipoprotein B plus the option of testing the LDL subfractions.

What are the 4 signs your heart is quietly failing?

  1. Fatigue is an early warning sign but it can also be caused by many other things so it is best to assess other signs too.
  2. Breathlessness, especially with activity as this can indicate a lack of oxygen being circulated.
  3. Sleep apnea puts extra stress on the heart, if this is not addressed it can lead to early heart disease.
  4. High blood pressure also puts stress on the heart, there are a number of medications for this plus natural options to reduce high blood pressure.

What are the warning signs of clogged arteries?

If you start to feel shortness of breath, weakness or dizziness, chest pain and nausea. Sometimes these symptoms can come and go or only occur with exertion but if you experience these symptoms you need a physical check up by your doctor or visit a hospital.

*At Planet Naturopath we focus on the pathology testing to assess markers for heart disease so that we can help with early detection and prevention of heart disease before you start to experience the warning signs of an impending heart attack
