What The GI-MAP Test Covers and How It Can Benefit You

Medical testing

Organisms in the digestive tract, such as bacteria, parasites and viruses can be the underlying cause of many digestive conditions and other chronic illnesses.

The GI-Microbial Assay Plus or GI-MAP test offers a comprehensive analysis using DNA/PCR techniques that assesses the markers most relevant for understanding how your digestive is affecting your health.

The GI-MAP Test assesses

  • Bacterial Pathogens (Campylobacter, C difficile Toxin A & B, E coli 0157, Salmonella, Shiga-like Toxins, Shigella, etc.)
  • Parasitic Pathogens (Cryptosporidium, Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia)
  • Viral Pathogens (Adenovirus, Norovirus, Rotavirus)
  • H pylori (H Pylori, cagA, vacA)
  • Zonulin which is a measurement of leaky gut
  • Normal Bacterial Flora (Bifidobacter, Enterococcus, E. coli, Lactobacillus, Akkermansia mucinophila, Clostridia (class*), Faecalibacterium prausnitzii)
  • Opportunistic Bacteria (Citrobacter, Klebsiella, Proteus, Yersinia, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Methanobacteriaceae (family), Fusobacterium spp., etc)
  • Parasites (Blastocystis hominis, Dientamoeba fragilis, Endolimax nana, Entamoeba coli, Chilomastix mesnelli, etc)
  • Fungi/Yeast (Candida albicans, Candida spp., Geotricum spp., Microsporidia spp., Trichosporon spp.)
  • Additional Tests (SIgA, Anti-Gliadin, Elastase, Lactoferrin, Occult Blood) These markers measure how well you’re absorbing nutrients, inflammation, immune function and gluten intolerance)

What The Patients Say

Hi, my name is Michael Smith, ND BHSC and Head Practitioner at Planet Naturopath.

While I don’t know the exact reason you’re interested in testing your digestion, I do know you’re searching for answers.
Whether that means looking for natural solutions to chronic health problems, eliminating your digestive symptoms, or just wanting to optimize your health.
If you want to find those answers, I can tell you the best way to start is with testing.

Doctors only offer basic digestion tests, if they test at all, which can miss many infections and don’t give an overall analysis of every aspect of your digestion.
Our GI-MAP Stool Test, on the other hand, looks at a wider range pathogens, as well as inflammation markers, gluten sensitivity, leaky gut, and absorption markers to find out how well you’re absorbing your nutrients.
But what makes the GI-MAP Test from Planet Naturopath invaluable, is what happens after you get your results. With our 45-minute in-depth one-on-one consultation, I’ll explain what your results actually mean to you, your health, and your body.
This is the fun part for me, because as Head Practitioner I enjoy doing all the consultations with our clients. My passion is helping people find natural solutions to optimize their health.
I’ll give you the complete details how the consultations work and how they can benefit you, but let’s start with:

Frequently Asked Questions About GI Map Test

The GI Map test is a stool test that is done at home and sent to the Diagnostic Solutions Lab for analysis, it uses the latest PCR DNA technology to help identify the underlying cause of digestive problems. It can measure bacteria, parasites and yeasts and give you an accurate level of how much is present while other stool tests will often just show if the pathogen is present or not. The test kits can be shipped worldwide.

The turnaround time for the GI Map results is 7-10 business days, with the current Covid-19 situation results are taking around two weeks on average once the lab receives the sample.

The GI Map does not specifically test for SIBO as this is only done with a breath test, but there are markers on the GI Map test that can help to identify if you have SIBO. I prefer the GI Map test as the first place to start as it can also identify the underlying cause of SIBO like H.pylori and the whether there is also large intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

The GI Map panel tests for parasites, worms, pathogenic yeasts, pathogenic and beneficial bacteria levels to identify the cause of digestive symptoms. Plus the GI Map test will also assess digestive enzymes, fat absorption, detoxification, inflammation, leaky gut, and gluten intolerance markers

The GI Map test uses PCR DNA technology to accurately identify the types of bacteria and parasites that are present, plus it can tell you the quantity present which is important.

Some stool tests will only show if a parasite is present or not, and you may get a positive result but it maybe at a low level that is not necessary to treat. Also the older culture based stool testing would miss many species of bacteria as they cannot be tested with this method.

The GI Map can accurately detect parasites, bacteria, viruses and candida, including the quantity that is present. It tests for many of the common pathogens and beneficial bacteria, but it does not test for every bacteria species that is present.

Yes the GI Map tests for H.pylori and gives an accurate quantity of H.pylori present.

The GI Map also measures the H.pylori virulence factors, this indicates whether you have the more pathogenic strain of H.pylori which can lead to ulcers or gastric cancer.

Knowing the quantity of H.pylori and whether the virulence factors are present is important when planning a treatment protocol, and whether treatment is necessary or not.

I prefer to use natural treatment options for H.pylori but the GI Map test will also detect whether the H.pylori present have antibiotic resistance to the commonly used antibiotics.

There are a number of different comprehensive stool tests available and they are not all created equal, the ones that are still using the old culture based detection methods should be avoided as there are many bacteria that they can’t detect.

A good quality DNA based test like the GI Map can detect parasite, yeast/ candida, bacteria and viruses and the quantity that is present, and this is good to know when treating digestion and health issues.

The GI Map test also measures the following intestinal health markers which can influence digestive health and your overall health

  • Pancreatic elastase – this measures the pancreatic enzymes which help with the digestion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates plus over absorption of nutrients
  • Steatocrit – measures the amount of fat in the stool and how well you are absorbing fats, high levels can indicate bile or gallbladder problems.
  • Blood – gives an accurate measurement of the presence of blood and the exact level. This can be important for the early detection of cancers and inflammatory bowel conditions
  • B-glucuronidase – this is a detox marker and high levels can indicate the reabsorption of toxins back into your body instead of being eliminated in the stool
  • Secretory IgA is the first line of defence against pathogens and an important part of your immune system, it can also protect against food intolerances
  • Anti-gliadin IgA – this is a component of gluten and a high level indicates an immune response against gluten, this will only be elevated if you are eating gluten before the test to trigger the immune response
  • Calprotectin is an inflammation marker and high levels indicate neutrophil damage to the gut mucosa, this is seen in inflammatory bowel disease and also with elevated pathogens.
  • Zonulin is a marker of intestinal permeability which is commonly called “leaky gut”. An elevated zonulin levels indicates the tight junctions between the cells is causing intestinal permeability and it is also possible that there is damage to the cells causing leaky gut.

The GI Map costs $395 and the GI Map with Zonulin costs $445

The best option is to get the consultation included to have the results explained to you and I will help you with a treatment plan.

The GI Map and consultation is $475 and the GI Map plus Zonulin with the consultation option is $525
