Krill Oil – an alternative to Statins

An exciting new therapy which replicates many of the benefits of statins, without the side effects, is krill oil. Krill, a small crustacean, is one of the first links in the marine food chain as a source of omega 3 fatty acids. Krill is a short-lived species, residing towards the bottom of the food chain. As a consequence of reduced bioaccumulation, krill is naturally low in toxins such as heavy metals and organochlorines.

Krill oil also differs from fish oil in another important way – unlike the Omega 3 fatty acids in fish oils, the EPA and DHA in krill oil are structurally intermingled with phospholipid molecules. This molecular structure facilitates the passage of fatty acid molecules through the intestinal wall, significantly increasing their bioavailability which means significant benefits to you.

Being highly bioavailable, krill oil is an excellent source of EPA and DHA, contributing an important antiinflammatory action by these well-known pathways which means reduced inflammation in conditions such as arthritis. In addition, krill oilalso contains vitamin A, vitamin E and a unique antioxidant compound–astaxanthin – shown to be 500 times more potent in quenching singlet oxygen free radicals than vitamin E. In fact, krill oil given to patients with cardiovascular disease and other inflammatory states reduced hsCRP levels by 30.9% from baseline over just 30 days.

In an ideal combination with this anti-inflammatory effect comes a highly beneficial action on the lipid profile. Supplementation with just 1000 – 1500 mg of krill oil daily for 12 weeks, LDL cholesterol was reduced by 32%, HDL cholesterol increased by a substantial 43%, and triglycerides reduced by 11%. In contrast to fish oil, where the key lipid-related benefit is the reduction of triglycerides, krill oil has a unique action to dramatically improve the balance between LDL and HDL cholesterol.
