Do Keto Supplements Work?

The Keto diet has been making a resurgence over the last 10 years and along with this, we are starting to see a growing number of Keto supplements.

I have tried the Keto diet on and off for the past 10 years but recently experimented with Keto supplements for the first time

In fact, as I write this my coffee has the added benefit of “Instant Ketones” which I am finding helps my focus without the jittery feeling that caffeine can sometimes give me.

Who is the Keto Diet for?

While I think the Keto diet is fantastic for many people it is not for everyone - I see it more as a tool to optimize your health for a number of reasons, but not necessarily a diet that you will do “forever” (except for some people who have medical conditions like epilepsy).

Who can benefit from the Keto diet

  • People who are overweight - the Keto diet is one of the fastest ways to lose weight with one of the main benefits being the cravings for food and the feeling of hunger disappear
  • If you have high insulin or blood glucose levels - the Keto diet will help to lower insulin and glucose levels and can even reverse type 2 diabetes (you need to be monitored by your health professional)
  • Endurance athletes - burning ketones for fuel is a much more efficient way for the body to produce energy and once you become fat adapted you have the feeling of endless energy
  • Improved focus and mental energy - this is one of my favorite benefits as there is no more slumps in energy that people eating a high carb type of diet get.
  • Neurological conditions such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s disease have all shown positive improvements on a Keto diet - this is one area where Keto supplements may have the biggest benefit.
  • Cancer research is also showing benefits of a Ketogenic diet in slowing and even reversing cancer growth
Vegetables are important on keto diet

Taking Instant Ketones helps you to stay in ketosis and be able to eat a lot more vegetables

Just because the Keto diet has so many benefits it does not mean that you should do the Keto diet constantly as for some people there can be side effects, plus it can be restrictive in certain social situations.

This is where I have found the Keto supplements to be very helpful - to quickly get back into ketosis.

Who should avoid the Keto diet

  • People with low thyroid function or low adrenal function should be careful on the Keto diet as it may have a negative effect on these hormones.
  • Women who are trying to fall pregnant - a Keto diet may negatively affect fertility, unless you are overweight then it could be a good short term solution to help optimize for a healthy pregnancy.
  • Women who are pregnant - of course there will be times during pregnancy when you are going to be in ketosis and that is ok but you don’t want to deliberately aim to be always in ketosis.

What about my heart health with all of those extra fats?

This is a common question and for most people there cholesterol levels and triglycerides improve on a Ketogenic diet - but for some people, these numbers can actually go the other way, especially for people with certain genes like APOE4, APOB and familial hypercholesterolemia.

The best idea is to test not only your cholesterol levels but more importantly markers like apolipoprotein B, or LDL particle number which are a much better indicator of cardiovascular risk.

High saturated fats are not the best for everyone, but you can still do a Keto diet and minimize saturated fats and focus on monounsaturated fats like olive oil and macadamia oil.

This is another reason to supplement with Instant Ketones - it can help to improve your ability to burn fats for energy without consuming high amounts of saturated fats.

Keto Supplements

The two Keto supplements that I have been experimenting with are Instant Ketones and MCT oil powder - both have been formulated by Dr. Colbert M.D

The reason for experimenting with the Keto supplements was to assess if I could quickly and easily get into ketosis and to improve mental and physical energy.

I don’t have weight to lose so this was not a focus - but it is important to note that people who are at their ideal weight can still get the benefits of ketosis without worrying about losing weight.

Dr Colbert M.D Instant Ketones was the best for mental and physical energy as it was able to get me into a higher level of ketosis than I could just by following a low carb Keto diet.

I would add it to my coffee each morning and while it did not enhance the flavor (like the MCT oil did), the trade-off for the improved energy levels was more than worth it.

Usually I take a scoop of both Instant Ketones plus MCT oil powder to help maintain my calorie levels but if you want to keep saturated fat levels to a minimum you can combine the Instant Ketones with a Keto diet high in monounsaturated fats for the best effects.

Dr Colbert M.D MCT oil powder was the best tasting option and I often used this by itself once I had been in ketosis for a couple of weeks, or if I was not trying to boost my Ketone levels. This is also a great option for weight loss, energy and improving satiety so you don’t feel hungry during the day.

Instant Ketones is the best choice for people with concerns for their cardiovascular health or if you are trying to treat cognitive conditions like Alzheimer's.

I find I can also eat a lot more vegetables when taking the Keto supplements and still stay in ketosis, this is always a bonus as I don’t like any type of eating plan that requires you to restrict vegetables for the long term.
