The Seed probiotic and prebiotic supplement, or Seed Synbiotic which the founders of Seed like to call it, is a new cutting-edge probiotic supplement based on the latest science on the bacteria that will benefit our digestive system.
I am always looking for ways to improve my own gut health, plus I help many clients with digestive issues so when I read the research that went into the strain-specific probiotics that went into the Seed probiotic formulation, I just had to give it a try.
A couple of months ago I started to experiment with the Seed probiotics and in this article, I will give you the pros and cons of the Seed supplement - and whether this is something for you to try.

The Seed company was formed by two scientists Ara Katz and Raja Dhir with a mission to make the world a better place, the first project from Seed was actually a bacteria for bees!
Bees are critical to the survival of many plants and important in pollinating around ⅓ of the world's crops, so Seed has produced a “probiotic biopatty” for bees which is undergoing positive results in the scientific trials in California and Canada. The probiotics help the bees immune system and make them more resistant to the effects of the pesticides which are used on many crops.
Seed also has a focus on the sustainability of the planet, all of the packagings are biodegradable and made from recycled materials. In fact, the cardboard packaging that helps keep the glass jar that the probiotics come in safe is made using mushrooms. You reuse the glass jar and the refills come in vacuum packed biodegradable packaging.
The Seed advisory board is comprised of leading scientists and doctors with expertise in microbiome science, genomics, metabolomics, gastroenterology, immunology, nutrition, and human clinical research.
The Seed probiotics contains a prebiotic outer capsule and a prebiotic inner capsule that contains the 50 billion-plus live bacteria.
It is called a synbiotic because of the synergistic nature of prebiotics and probiotics - the prebiotics will help the beneficial bacteria levels thrive by providing them with the “food” that they love.
The prebiotic outer shell contains phenolic compounds from wild-harvested organic Scandinavian Chaga, pomegranate and pine bark. This may not sound delicious to us but its food that the beneficial microorganisms love to eat.
The algae delivery system ensures the bacteria survive to the large intestine where they exert their benefits, not all probiotic supplements will do that. Some formulations may have good strains of bacteria but they don’t survive the harsh environment of the stomach or are destroyed by the bile acid, making them ineffective.
The individual bacteria strains used in the Seed probiotic is what makes Seed so special.
First, let's define exactly what to look for when you are reading the label on a probiotic supplement.
Most people have heard of lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. These are the bacteria genus, and while they are important, there are many different species of these bacteria, some of them are beneficial and some of them are not.
This is a specific species of a genus, for example, Bifidobacterium longum is a well-researched species of bacteria, and this is going to have different beneficial effects on your health compared to Bifidobacterium breve, even though they are from the same genus.
This is a specific strain of a bacteria species, for instance, Bifidobacterium longum SD-BB536-JP is the specific strain that benefits your digestive system and this can have different effects on the body compared to other strains of Bifidobacterium longum. If we take, for example, Bifidobacterium longum SD-BL4-IT, it is a different strain that has proven benefits on the cardiovascular system.
I am not surprised as it took me a while to get my head around the naming of bacteria, and scientists are not too inventive with their naming, so I don’t expect anyone to remember SD-BB536-JP strain of Bifidobacteria.
An easier way to remember is using dogs as an example. All dogs come from the same species but you would not buy a poodle to be a guard dog - for this job you would get a different type of dog (or strain) like a German Shepherd.
Or if you were getting a dog for an older person you might choose a small Chichiwawa and not a cattle dog that needs lots of exercises and running - so different types of dogs are good for different things, same with bacteria, different strains will have different effects on your health.
Note: Seed probiotic and prebiotic supplement is vegan-friendly, gluten-free, non-GMO, preservative-free, and allergen-free.
The female and male bodies are unique and have a different relationship with bacteria. Therefore, Seed has designed Male Daily Synbiotic and Female Daily Synbiotic.
These supplements have in common a combination of the main ingredients that help improve digestion, metabolism, cardiovascular system, and metabolism, preserve gut barrier integrity and reduce oxidative stress.
However, there is a slight difference between the male and female versions.
Seed’s Male Daily Synbiotic has 20 probiotic strains, including two strains, which are known to reduce inflammatory processes and improve muscle recovery.
Female Daily Synbiotic has 24 probiotic strains, including specific strains that help enhance skin health and boost the production of folate.
Folate plays a crucial role in women's health, promoting fertility and supporting a healthy pregnancy. Seed Synbiotic supports a healthy microbiome and this way boosts folate production.
So after 2 months of taking two capsules of the Seed probiotic formula each day, what difference did I notice to my gut health and stool quality?
I know there are many different variables but I noticed that I have had a stronger immune system, I traveled from Canada to Australia and back, with people sick all around me and I came through feeling fine. Usually, jetlag affects me badly and this is the time I will catch a cold or some type of sickness.
Digestion-wise, I noticed a better quality stool, especially over the last month, and that was when I was traveling too which can make it harder to stick to my usual diet. I expect the benefits to my digestive system will continue to improve over time.
Things like the cardiovascular benefits are harder to gauge. I have a family history of heart disease, so I want to be proactive in this area. The Seed formula contains bacteria that help reduce inflammation and lower the risk of developing heart disease, therefore, I am happy to continue with the Seed probiotics.
